WHO: Middle and High School Science Teachers

WHAT: FREE In-person teacher workshop focused on content and curriculum connected to NGSS Earth's Systems standards.

• Participants will receive 1 graduate credit from the University of Colorado Boulder (paid for by MOSAiC scientists) for completing the workshop.

WHEN: Wednesday, June 12th AND Thursday, June 13th from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm MT each day.

The Arctic is warming 4x faster than the rest of the world, a phenomenon called Arctic amplification. How is it that the Arctic, a vast frozen ocean surrounded by fewer than four million inhabitants, could be warming more rapidly than the rest of the world. To better understand the changing Arctic climate system, hundreds of scientists spent a year living on a ship that was frozen in sea ice gathering data from ocean, sea ice, and atmosphere as part of the 2019-2020 MOSAiC Arctic research expedition. This summer '24,  learn how to bring the exciting science and adventure of the MOSAiC expedition into your classroom!

In this FREE teacher workshop, you’ll hear from MOSAiC scientists and the curriculum developers as they lead you through "Arctic Feedbacks: Not all warming is equal”, a storyline curriculum tied to NGSS Earth’s Systems standards in which students explore parts of the Arctic climate system to determine why the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world. Engage with immersive 360° virtual field trips, authentic real-time Arctic datasets, PhET simulations, and App-based labs in this in-person teacher workshop. Participants will engage with these and other lesson tasks from both the teacher and student perspective and leave the workshop prepared to facilitate the unit in their classrooms!

As part of the workshop, we'll visit the Fiske Planetarium to view two MOSAiC planetarium films and engage accompanying hands-on activities. Note that the MOSAiC planetarium shows and activities are part of a field trip package and available to classrooms in the 2024/2025 school year.
