Virtual Colorado Science Conference: Data Puzzles Session
Data Puzzles: Making Sense of Science in the Classroom
Saturday, November 6th 2021 (2:00 pm - 2:50 pm MDT)
Speakers: Lynne Harden, Jon Griffith, and Katya Schloesser (CIRES Education & Outreach at the University of Colorado Boulder)
Description: How do we engage students in more authentic and engaging scientific inquiry in the classroom? In this presentation, we’ll share an innovative science learning framework we developed (“Data Puzzles”) that combines authentic scientific data with the research-backed pedagogical practices of Ambitious Science Teaching. Data Puzzle activities not only give students a chance to analyze and interpret real data, but they provide students with a relevant context that allows them to connect with the data in a meaningful way. MIddle and high school educators who designed their own Data Puzzles will share their experiences and how activities like this can be used in the classroom to transform science teaching and learning. Data Puzzles are free, open-source educational resources available to anyone.
