Creating Presentations

Learn how to create engaging presentations with CEEE workshops and resources, offering scientists tools for storytelling, structuring talks, and connecting with diverse audiences.

This collection of resources provides the practical tools needed for making compelling presentations focused on storytelling, audience engagement, and clear communication of complex ideas. Through the Engaged Scientist Series of workshops and the Making Presentations that Stick video, you'll receive ideas on brainstorming, structuring your presentations, and applying techniques that connect your work to real-world issues. These resources, tailored for early-career STEM researchers, offer strategies to engage diverse audiences, promote environmental resilience, and communicate effectively through traditional and social media platforms, ensuring your science makes an impact beyond the university setting.

Engaged Scientist Series

As communities increasingly grapple with problems of resiliency and environmental health and safety, we need scientists who are equipped to help. The Engaged Scientist Series of workshops targeted early-career STEM researchers across campus (typically graduate students, post-docs, and interested faculty) and provided perspectives and resources intended to facilitate their positive engagement with partners and audiences beyond the university setting.

The workshop series featured public lectures and interactive sessions aimed at fostering partnerships between scientists and communities. Experts from various fields, including Earth and environmental science, communication, and community engagement, shared case studies and best practices for building collaborative, resilient, and inclusive partnerships. Topics ranged from advancing environmental justice to making science more accessible and usable in real-world settings. The series provided tools for graduate students and postdocs to effectively engage with diverse audiences, manage partnership challenges, and communicate their work through traditional and social media channels.

The workshop series has concluded, but resources from the workshops are available below.

Resources

Each resource in this collection includes a recorded lecture from the Engaged Scientist Series and workshop materials including background information, lecture slides, handouts, and more.

Making Presentations That Stick

What makes a compelling presentation about your work and science? Making Presentations that Stick explores what makes a compelling and engaging presentation about you and your work by centering storytelling and engagement techniques. In this video, we explore and provide tools to work through the brainstorming process, structuring your talk, and engagement techniques.
