CEEE's Ami Nacu-Schmidt's work on the MeCCO project Highlighted in CU Boulder Today

The work done by CEEE’s own Ami Nacu-Schmidt has been featured in CU Boulder Today with the Media and Climate Change Observatory (MeCCO), a globally recognized initiative tracking how climate change is portrayed in media outlets around the world. The recent feature highlights new findings from the project, including a 14% decline in global media coverage of climate change in 2025 — a shift with important implications for public awareness and engagement.

As the Infographics, Design & Outreach Lead for MeCCO, Nacu-Schmidt plays a central role in translating complex data into accessible, visually compelling insights. Each month, she updates 26 interactive figures that analyze climate coverage across 131 newspapers, radio programs, and television outlets spanning 59 countries and 14 languages. Her work helps researchers, policymakers, journalists, and the public better understand how climate issues are framed across political, economic, cultural, ecological, and meteorological contexts worldwide.

In addition to maintaining the project’s dynamic visual database, Nacu-Schmidt designs and publishes infographics and a comprehensive monthly summary that synthesizes global trends in climate reporting. These summaries illuminate how major events — from international climate negotiations to extreme weather disasters — shape media narratives and public discourse. Her ability to merge design, data analysis, and climate expertise ensures that MeCCO’s findings are both rigorous and widely accessible.

The CU Boulder Today feature underscores the importance of tracking climate communication at a time when sustained public attention is critical. Through her work with MeCCO, Nacu-Schmidt helps provide a clearer picture of how climate change is discussed, and sometimes deprioritized, across the globe. CEEE is proud to see her contributions recognized and to support research that strengthens climate literacy and informed engagement worldwide.
