Arctic Amplification and the Inequities of Climate Change with Dr. Jen Kay

Thank you everyone who joined our live event with the feature scientist in the CEEE Not All Warming is Equal Data Puzzle lesson, Dr. Jen Kay. We are excited to share this edition of the Science Show & Share classroom video call where, Dr. Kay describes her research as it relates to using observational data and climate models to understand the inequities of climate change, including why the Arctic is warming faster than the rest of the world, and answered questions from classrooms and the public.

About the Presenter

Dr. Jen Kay, an Associate Professor in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and a CIRES Fellow at CU Boulder, researches climate change by integrating observations and models. Her work focuses on how radiation, clouds, precipitation, and sea ice affect the climate. Current projects include the PREFIRE mission, which will use CubeSat satellites to study Arctic radiation, and research on Arctic warming and precipitation changes with funding from NASA and NSF. Dr. Kay also explores science communication, particularly in climate education and outreach. Her research areas cover atmosphere, climate, cryosphere, and oceans.

Data Puzzles (CEEE) Not all Warming is Equal

To get data for any day – go to this website; at the upper right you should see a world icon with three options (Arctic, Geographic, Antarctic). Pick “Arctic”. Then toggle at the bottom to select different dates. The URL will automatically update.

Data: passive microwave satellite, longer wavelength than visible wavelengths but good for seeing through clouds and detecting sea ice vs. open water: https://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/ ftp://sidads.colorado.edu/DATASETS/NOAA/G02135/north/monthly/data/

PREFIRE CubeSats Launched on May 25 and June 5, 2024! Mission Goal: Study Arctic Heat Loss to Space. Rocket Lab - 'PREFIRE & Ice' Launch .
