About the Presenter

John Pflaumer joined the Ohio Army National Guard in 1985 to help pay for college and discovered he loved the sense of purpose, adventure, and camaraderie the Army provided, ultimately serving in roles he never imagined. After retiring, he felt a void, and during a visit to a national park he learned about applying to the National Park Service, eventually being hired at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Ohio. Working as a park ranger made him genuinely happy—helping kids earn junior ranger badges, sharing the park’s history, and engaging visitors energized him. Now serving as the Education & Outreach Coordinator at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Rainbow Bridge National Monument, he feels he has found a new home serving his country again by inspiring students, supporting education, and helping protect and share these public lands.
